Bob McLynn would come to Windham to ski as a kid. Fast forward 30 years, he brings his wife Sarah and 2 young daughters here as they learn to ski.
Sarah immediately falls in love with the town. Of course she does: It’s beautiful, and it’s New York.
Sarah is a true New Yorker. I don’t mean that in a “Yo Brooklyn where you at?” kinda sense…I mean this girl has lived all over the state and its the only place she wants to be. She will be the first to tell you that the Bills are the only NFL team that actually plays in New York.
Born and raised in Buffalo (Western New York), Sarah starred in basketball in high school (All State Team) before moving on to college in the most northern part of the state at St. Lawrence University. There she continued her basketball career and helped her team to 2 straight Final Four appearances.
After college, a move southeast to New York City for a career in architectural design was next, and she met Bob. There they started a family and raised their 2 girls.
Bob brings the girls to Central New York (Windham) to learn to ski. Sarah tells Bob ,"This is going to be our Home."
So they buy a house on Cave Mountain. Yea, the mountain that looms over downtown Windham where people ski, thats actually called Cave Mountain. Windham High Peak is just down the road. You can try to ski it but you will most likely break your neck. Hell of a place to hike though.
Bob has a day job in music. It’s been his life actually (other than those girls). Beer is his other passion.
He actually discovered real beer through his career in music. It was while he was in a band on tour in Europe for the first time back in 1994 that it clicked.
At first the cases of warm beer backstage at the dingy punk rock clubs left something to be desired. He was used to crushing Bud Lights on his head and doing keg stands in his rehearsal space back in the States.
Then after 14 stops in Germany, he realized that each city had its own brewery as a source of local pride. Onward through Belgium, England etc….
Seven weeks later he came home and the Bud Lights had lost all their lustre.
After the good and hard years of life as a musician, Bob co-founded Crush Music with a partner in NYC where they went on to manage the careers of several acts including Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Miley Cyrus etc. They opened a bar in the East Village called Angels and Kings which led to outposts in Chicago, Los Angeles and Barcelona. It was in Chicago at the bar that Bob brewed his first beer sold to the public - Capone Amber Ale made with Half Acre Brewing.
From there he helped start Saint Archer Brewing in San Diego. That sold to Miller/Coors after 2 years, so Bob looked back to Asbury Park, New Jersey where he came up as a musician and founded Asbury Park Brewery in 2016.
So they buy the house in Windham, and Bobs like “why the hell isn’t there a Brewery here? It's a mountain town with a ski resort for gods sake!? Also we need some music up here.” He's on a mission.
Starting with the music he puts together Cave Mountain Music Festival bringing a bunch of national acts to town including Weezer and JRAD. Unfortunately the event had to be cancelled before it could play.
So now the focus is on the Brewery.
He starts looking locally for a Brewmaster. After months without luck, he meets a crunchy guy named Owen Hartman from the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont.
Similar to Bob, Owen discovered “real beer” in Europe while he was coaching lacrosse in Germany after college. He came back and learned his craft at the American Brewers Guild.
After that he started at Great Adirondack Brewery in Lake Placid, followed by a stint at Fiddlehead before becoming Head Brewer at Dirt Church back in Northeast Vermont.
Its been a few years of planning with plenty of trial and error, but the Team was excited to finally throw to doors open the day after Thanksgiving 2024. The Brewery itself is a converted house right off the Batavia Kill River in the center of Downtown Windham.
It was home to a Pizzeria before being converted to an Air BnB.
We think its the perfect spot to make beer….even better to drink it.
